Adjusting Voting Rights During an Ongoing Vote

Updating Voting Rights After a Vote Has Started

By default, voting rights in NemoVote are locked once a vote is opened. At that moment, a snapshot of the eligible voters is taken and stored in the database. This ensures stability and prevents unauthorized changes.

However, in some cases, it may be necessary to adjust voting rights even after a vote has started. This is especially useful for non-live votes that remain open for several days, where the final voter list was not yet fully defined at the start.

To allow changes to voting rights in an ongoing vote, enable the setting:
"Should new voters access the voting, after it has been opened?"

How It Works

When this setting is activated:

  • New voters added to an eligible voter list automatically receive voting rights for the ongoing vote.
  • Voters who have not yet voted and are removed from the voter list lose their voting rights immediately.
  • Administrator overviews (e.g., lists of voters who haven’t voted yet) are updated in real-time.
  • Results tables and roll call lists adjust automatically.

Analogy to Paper Voting

This system functions similarly to distributing or withdrawing paper ballots:

  • Adding a voter after the vote has started is like handing them a ballot after voting is already underway.
  • Removing a voter before they cast a vote is like taking back their ballot before they can submit it.

Limitations

Once a vote has been cast and counted, it cannot be changed or removed. This ensures the integrity and immutability of the election results.
In traditional paper voting, this would be like trying to retrieve a specific ballot from a sealed ballot box—it’s simply not possible.

Important:
If this feature is activated, deleting the entire voter list removes voting rights for all voters who have not yet cast their vote.

Enabling E-Mail Notifications for Voters

If the ability to modify voter lists is disabled, the administrator will receive a warning before opening the vote. They will also have the option to send an email notification to all voters about the new vote.

If the feature is enabled:

  • New voters will automatically receive an email notification about the open vote.
  • Removed voters will not receive a notification.

Summary

To allow voting rights to be updated while a vote is already in progress, enable the setting "Should new voters access the voting, after it has been opened?" in NemoVote. This provides flexibility for elections with evolving voter lists. However, once a vote is cast, it remains final to maintain election integrity.
